About Tibbs House

Tibbs House is Auckland Grammar School's boarding hostel. Located directly adjacent to the School on the corner of Mountain and Clive Roads, Tibbs House opened in 1962 to provide opportunities for boys outside of the Auckland area to attend Auckland Grammar School.

Tibbs House is led by Director of Boarding Mr Frank Haszard '93. He is a master Economics teacher, having taught the subject at both NCEA and Cambridge level since 2009. He has also just finished up as the Form 7 Dean for the past six years, and he was an Associate Housemaster at Tibbs from 2012 to 2016.

Tibbs House provides accommodation, study and recreational facilities for up to 125 boarders across all year levels. Each form level has a designated boarding master, and tutors are available each night to help students with prep.

Tibbs House is the only guaranteed means for out-of-zone boys to attend Auckland Grammar School. There are two scholarships available for current Year 8 students: the Cooper-Connell Scholarship and the Sir John Buchanan Scholarship.

The Cooper-Connell Scholarship

The Cooper-Connell Scholarship was established in memory of two distinguished Old Boys - Sir Henry Cooper '22 and Barrie Frederick Connell '44.

Sir Henry was a Waiuku boy who attended Auckland Grammar on a scholarship and went on to become a highly regarded Headmaster of the School. Barrie was a former Head Prefect, Dux and captain of the School's 1st XV Rugby team and a strong supporter of the Auckland Grammar School's Old Boys' Association.

The Sir John Buchanan Scholarship

Established by Sir John Buchanan '56, in recognition of the role Grammar played in his development during his time at the School, this scholarship is given to a well-rounded young man who will benefit from the competitive educational and sporting environment provided by both the School and Tibbs House.

The Sir John Buchanan Scholarship is for current Year 8 students living in the South Auckland region, where Sir John grew up, who are potential role models and future leaders.
