Members of the Headmaster's Heritage Committee have been speaking to some of our Old Boys about their careers, and how their time at the School shaped them. The first of these interviews is with Dr Henry Wong Doe '90, a very well-regarded musician and educator based in the United States and the 2020 Lion Award winner. Music runs in Henry’s blood and it was his education at the School that allowed him to express himself in a creative outlet. He twice won the Minister's Plate competition, the Martin Stafford prize and the Ray Wilson prize for music. "Music is a very emotional, visceral art form, and piano is especially gratifying because the musical experience is so immediate." Henry has performed in some of the world's most famous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall (in New York), Heinz Hall (in Pittsburgh), the Sydney Opera House, St.Martin-in-the-Fields (in London), Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay (in Singapore), and Mann Auditorium (in Israel). He has been a featured artist at the Busoni International Piano Festival in Bolzano, Italy, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago, USA and the Brussels Piano Festival in Belgium. A highlight of the 2020-2021 season include a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra. In June, Henry joined us (after two weeks in managed isolation!) to adjudicate the annual Minster's Plate competition, and he sat down with committee member Vishwas Iyer to talk about his career.
